Germany’s Grass blasts treatment of GreeceArticle from Boston.com:
BERLIN—German Nobel literature laureate Guenter Grass has criticized Greece’s treatment in the debt crisis, describing it in a new poem as a “country sentenced to poverty.”

The 84-year-old’s latest work, “Europe’s Disgrace,” was published Saturday in the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung. It comes less than two months after Grass triggered a storm of criticism with another intervention on a political issue — a prose poem sharply criticizing Israel amid the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.

Greece is struggling with austerity and reform programs demanded by creditors in exchange for rescue loans. Speculation is growing that [...] Continue Reading…

Lawn mower thefts ‘crime of opportunity,’ police sayArticle from The State Journal-Register:Stephanie Schatz said she never thought someone would want to steal her two old lawn mowers.
They were bulky, covered in grass clippings and dirt and simply hard to steal, said Schatz.
Not hard enough, apparently. Both of Schatz’s old push mowers were taken earlier this month from the fenced-in backyard of her home south of downtown.
She is among 35 people who have fallen victim to the same crime in Springfield this year.

Residents extinguish grass fire in SeguinArticle from San Antonio Express:Last winter’s abundant rain across South Central Texas left behind a luxuriant blanket of native grasses, weeds and wildflowers. But an unusually dry April has transformed much of that growth into easily ignited fuel.
Carla Stewart-Norris recently observed this firsthand just after having lunch at Seguin’s Los Cucos Mexican Cafe. While walking to the parking lot, she watched as a motorist approaching Interstate 10 on the nearby entrance ramp tossed a cigarette into the dry grass by the highway. Soon a thick plume of white smoke was blowing west along I-10, [...] Continue Reading…
